I stumbled into this one around the second release—Syl Kougaï had posted a clip on Facebook teasing “Love dies from everything” alongside a live modular session. That little teaser hit hard. There was something raw about it—the drums, the spatial tension, the not-quite-human textures—and I had to hear more. When the full version dropped, it did not disappoint. It actually veered in a totally unexpected direction… and that unpredictability? That’s part of the charm.
This second season of Kougaï’s Modular Series is shaping up to be an expansive, glitch-infused journey through texture, space, and restraint. Built entirely with his custom SYLAB modular system, the series drips with handcrafted synthesis and tightly-woven narrative energy. It’s modular music with intention, not just cool sounds for the sake of it.
Sculpted Chaos with a Pulse
Each track in Season-02 feels like its own biome—Love dies from everything, Metanoïa, Children of the Orb, and the two-part closer Forged in embers, we rise all explore vastly different tonal environments. But there’s still a thread tying them together: tension, decay, atmosphere. There’s melody in the noise, rhythm in the crumble.
What makes this release stand out is Kougaï’s control. Even when things feel loose or improvisational, you can tell he’s steering the patch. Subtle reverb shifts, harmonic emphasis, slow-burn builds—it’s all deliberate. You can feel the hours behind each track. And despite all the technical precision, there’s something emotionally charged here. These aren’t cold modular etudes—they breathe, ache, and glitch like ghosts caught in rewiring.
The video components that accompany the series are a bonus: tight camera angles on his modular rack, a studio full of glowing voltage and knob choreography. It’s immersive without being flashy—just like the music.
The artwork alone deserves praise. That tangled, biomechanical aesthetic from Bleeding Arts Studios pairs beautifully with the sonics—burnt circuits, scorched emotions, distorted silhouettes.
Impression System™- Custom Cables and Coded Emotion:
Voltage Wobble Factor: ⚡⚡⚡⚡/5
Subtle movement everywhere. Nothing harsh or screechy—just slow morphs, granular shifts, and EQ-ed presence that keeps the stereo field breathing.
Patch Ritual Coherence: 🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧/5
Every track feels like it came from the same ritual. SYLAB speaks fluently here—tight language, no filler oscillations.
Glitch Sensibility Index: 🫧🫧🫧🫧.5/5
These aren’t aggressive glitches—they’re ornamental. Clicks and errors that decorate, not dominate.
Emotive Circuit Bleed: 💔💻💔💻💔
There’s actual feeling here—especially on “Love dies from everything.” These aren’t cold modules spitting out patterns. There’s intention, and maybe some melancholy tucked inside the signal chain.
Textural Clarity Score: 9.3/10
Sounds like crushed velvet pressed through a DSP stencil. Clean, but not sterile. Detailed without losing warmth.
Narrative Drift Alignment: 🛰️🛰️🛰️🛰️/5
Strong sense of narrative across the tracks. You could imagine this as an abstract sci-fi opera—or a dream unfolding in five acts.
Syl Kougaï’s Modular Series – Season-02 isn’t loud or flashy. It’s not trying to prove anything. It’s just confident modular worldbuilding with a sharp ear for detail and an emotional undercurrent that’s hard to shake.
With more episodes still to come in the series, I’m excited to see where he takes things next. If the first five tracks are any indication, we’re in for something rare—modular work that’s not just technically sharp, but spiritually coherent. There’s a story in here, buried under voltages and tape hiss. You just have to tune in.
